Bernard Joseph VOORS (FORCE)
b. 17 May 1828
d. 13 APR 1868 in Logansport, Indiana
bu. Headstone in Fort Wayne Catholic Cemetery, Fort Wayne, Indiana
First row center circle section B 7
f. John B. Bernard Voors
m. Ann Thecla Schoene

Bernard was fifteen years old when the family came to the United States. Sometime shortly after the family arrived in Allen County, Bernard entered the seminary at Notre Dame and was ordained a priest in the Congregation of the Holy Cross at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago on December 11, 1850.

He served at St. John's Church in Lake County and supervised the building of the new church there. While he was there he also served Catholics in Michigan City. In 1857 he became pastor at LaPorte for two years.

In 1859 he left the order of Holy Cross and became a member of the Fort Wayne Diocese.

In 1860 he became the first resident pastor of St. Charles Church in Peru, Indiana. While there he also served as a circuit riding priest and attended from time to time the Catholics who lived in Kokomo, Tipton, and Bunker Hill. While at Peru he had a rectory constructed at a cost of $1200 and purchased land for the Catholic cemetery there. The 1860 Census list him as Benjamin J. Force, thirty-three, born in Hanover, Germany. He opened a school, primarily conducted from the rectory, while at Peru. He hired a young man to teach there. His sister, Mary Gesena, joined him at Peru to help with the school. While he served in Peru the Wabash-Erie canal was constructed through the town by a large group of Irish workers. Fr. Bernard, out of concern for them, established a St. Patrick's Society in the parish.

In 1864 Father Bernard was appointed pastor of St. Vincent's parish in Logansport. There is a question about his date of death. One source lists it as 04 APR 1868 and another say 09 June 1868. He was only 40 years old at the time of his death.

He is buried next to his brother, John H. Force. No explanation has been found concerning why they used the surname FORCE - possibly an Anglicized pronunciation of the German name VOORS
