CALVIN C. FORCE
Calvin C. Force, who had been a resident of Russell for over half a century, died at his home in that city on Wednesday morning, September 7, 1932, at the age of 81 years. He had been in ill health for a number of years.
Funeral services, under the auspices of the I.O.O.F. order and the Charley Clark Post of the American Legion, were held at the M. E. church in Russell on Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. Clark, followed by interment in the Russell cemetery.
Mr. Force was a veteran of the civil war. He was too young to enlist, but ran away from home, following his brother, and joined the army. Because of an error in war records he was never able to get a pension. He was kept in the rear of the lines most of the time, serving as an errand boy, but saw real service a part of the time. Nevertheless, he was an ardent supporter of the G.A.R. and W.R.C. For over fifty years he had been a member of the I.O.O.F. lodge at Russell, in which he took a great interest.
About four years ago Mr. Force constructed a sun dial in the park at Russell, which attracted a great deal of attention. In early days, he conducted a store at Zero, then a mining camp located between Russell and Melrose. For many years he carried the Des Moines Tribune to patrons, and later acted in a similar capacity for the Ottumwa Courier. A few years ago he gave up active work and made his home with a brother-in-law, Jake Scott, who died last January.
Calvin Force was married in young manhood to Miss Mattie Scott. To them was born one son, Guy Force of Russell. The wife and mother died when Guy was a child. Some time afterward, Mr. Force was married to Miss Nettie Goltry, who died several years ago.
Mr. Force is survived by one son, Guy E., and five grandchildren, also a sister, Mrs. Emeline Goltry, all of Russell.
