GUY ELBERT FORCE
All of Russell and community were grieved to learn of the death of Guy Force, who passed away Sunday afternoon at 3:00 o'clock at the age of 59 years, one month and 22 days. He had been ill but a short time and his sudden, unexpected death came as a great shock to his many friends and loved ones.
Guy Elbert Force, son of Calvin and Martha Force was born in Russell, Iowa, December 15, 1889, and departed this life on Sunday February 6, 1949. Practically all his life was spent in Russell, Iowa with the exception of a short time when he with his father and step-mother lived in Des Moines. His mother, infant sister, and father all preceded him in death.
After his mother's death he was taken into the home of his aunt, Mrs. Zeddie Wiltsey and lived there for several happy years. He graduated from the Russell High School in 1909. On July 30, 1917, he enlisted in the army and served his country in the Signal Corps of the 3rd Division. He attained the rank of Corporal, and was awarded the purple heart for shrapnel wounds received in both legs. He received an Honorable Discharge June 23, 1919.
While he never fully recovered from his wounds, he began work in 1920 following his appointment as rural letter carrier. He continued his work on Route No. 1 until Nov. 28, when ill health interrupted his work.
On April 13, 1919 he was united in marriage to Nora Ethel Hanks. To this union were born five children. Irma, the only daughter, preceded her father in death, April 4 1937. Surviving are the wife and four sons: Ardys, of Des Moines; Paul, Donald and Wendell who are attending Simpson College at Indianola, Iowa, and a foster daughter Doris Taylor Winsor, who shared the Force home from August 1937 until her marriage. Besides the immediate family, he leaves numerous other relatives and a host of friends to mourn their loss.
Early in life he joined the Methodist Church, and dedicated his life to Christian service. He served as Sunday School Supt. and on the church board for many years, being Chairman at the time of his death. Few layman have served their church and community as faithfully. His Christian life could be a guide for others. He followed the example of his Master, forgetting himself in the interests of others.
He taught Christianity by example as well as by precept. The memory of his unselfish deeds will continue to lead his family and his friends in a better life.
