UNION, March 19 - Mrs. Alma Elizabeth Hackford Forbush, 89, Union, a handcart pioneer of 1865, affectionately called "Aunt Bessie" by many residents of Union, died Friday at 7 a.m. in a Salt Lake hospital of causes incident to age.
Born April 10, 1858, in Herefordshire, England, she was a daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Phillips Hackford. She crossed the plains with her parents in a handcart company when she was seven.
A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints throughout her life, Mrs. Forbush was active in the Relief Society in Union ward for many years.
She was married to Hyrum H. Forbush in the Salt Lake Endowment house about 1876. Mr. Forbush died in January 1933.
Five of her 12 sons and daughters survive: Mrs. Verda Rose, Mrs. Belle Thompson, Salt Lake City; Reuben H., Raymond E. and Marvin A. Forbush Union; 41 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren, and a half brother, Albert Walker, Idaho Falls, Ida.
Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. in Union ward chapel by Austin Walker, bishop. Burial will be in Murray city cemetery. Friends may call at 36 E. 7th South, Salt Lake City, until Monday evening, and at the residence of Marvin A. Forbush, Union, Tuesday from 10 a.m. until time of funeral.
