Birth: Dec. 26, 1881
Holt County
Nebraska, USA
Death: Aug. 11, 1958
Multnomah County
Oregon, USA

Mary Amanda was born in 1881 at Inman, NE, the 4th of 7 daughters born to Hiram & Laura Ladocia (Ingalls) Forbes. Her parents are referred to as Uncle Hi & Aunt Docia in Laura Ingalls Wilder book, By the Shores of Silver Lake.

The Forbes family moved around a lot. Work & housing of the time were often associated with building railroads and land grant opportunities. They eventually settled in Nebraska, not too far away from the Baker family of merchants in Newcastle, NE.

A month before she turned 18 in 1899, Mary Amanda married Edward Oscar Baker (also known as Oscar or sometimes E.O. Baker like his father). To this union, 4 children were born. The first child was born the first year following the marriage, then she moved with her husband's family to ND and had 3 more children born there. Their youngest child, Viola, was either born disabled or became so early in life as she was always known to be in a wheelchair and she lived with her parents all her life.

Life was hard in North Dakota as the Depression set in and the Baker family migrated to Oregon in the 1930's seeking new opportunities. They resettled in Silverton, Oregon where Oscar made a living as a salesman at the general store.

After her husband passed away in 1948, Mary moved herself & Viola into Portland. She passed away in 1958 and was buried in the Miller Cemetery outside Silverton, OR next to her husband. Viola followed 3 years later.
