Dies While At Funeral – Mrs. W. O. Forbes Passes Away in Church.
She Had Hurried to the Services and Succumbed to an Attack of Heart Disease.
While attending the funeral of Kenneth Mackenzie, a 16-year-old boy, who had died of congestion of the brain, Mrs. W. O. Forbes, wife of Rev. W. O. Forbes, a retired minister, dropped dead of heart disease, at the First Presbyterian Church yesterday afternoon. Death was so sudden that it was at first thought she had fainted. She was quietly carried into the lobby of the church, where efforts were made to revive her, before it was discovered that she had expired. The funeral services were concluded without it becoming known that Mrs. Forbes had died.
Mrs. Forbes resided at 328 Fourteenth street, and had walked rapidly to the church, in order to be there before the funeral exercises began. She was considerably out of breath on her arrival, and seated herself in the rear of the church, so as not to disturb the services, which Rev. E. P. Hill was conducting. She had not been at the church more than a few minutes when she fell forward from her seat to the aisle.
Thinking that she had fainted, several in attendance at the funeral carried her into the lobby, where an effort was made to revive her.
Mrs. Forbes had been suffering from heart trouble for some time, and was subject to sudden attacks. Her husband, Rev. Mr. Forbes, was out of the city at the time of Mrs. Forbes' death, having gone to Lewiston, Idaho, on business. He was telegraphed to yesterday afternoon, and will return to the city at once. Alice Forbes, a daughter of the deceased, was prostrated last night and was being cared for by friends.
Mrs. Forbes had resided in Portland for 15 years. She was prominent in church work and had a large circle of friends. No funeral arrangements will be made until the return of her husband to Portland.
