Joseph Alonzo Forbes was the son of John Gilbert Forbes and Elizabeth Matthews, born Crown Point, Indiana. He was one of 12 children born to that marriage. A Civil War Veteran, he served in Co. D, 31st IA Infantry. He married Elizabeth Aletha Smith 17 May 1860 in LaPorte City, Black Hawk Co., IA. He was the father of eight surviving children, Ida V., Joseph Adelbert, Adora Luella, John Lewis, Nellie Ermine, Gertrude Anne, Grace Elizabeth and Edna Aletha Forbes.
