"Mrs. Lucy E. Smith of Worcester died of intestinal obstruction on Wednesday evening at the Parshall Hospital in Oneonta, of which she had been a patient for a few days. The funeral was held at her late home on Saturday at 2 p. m. the Rev. C. L. Herrick of Sidney officiated with burial in Maple Grove cemetery. Mrs. Smith was born July 25, 1848, in Cherry Valley and was a daughter of Christopher and Catherine Foland of that place. She was married in 1866 to Jerry B. Smith of Worcester, and her home ever since had been in that village. She was a most estimable woman, a faithful member of the Baptist Church and of the Women's Relief Corps. Mrs. Smith is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Edward Dickinson of Worcester and Mrs. W. C. Dodge of Unadilla; by five sisters, Mrs. Mary Gross of Cherry Valley, Mrs. Jennie Warren and Mrs. Catherine Tipple of Troy, Mrs. Fanny Weber of Oneonta and Mrs. William Hayner of the state of Oregon; and by three brothers, Fred, James and Alfred Foland, residing in Oregon, Oklahoma and Florida respectively. Jerry Wilson and Mrs. Howard Blanchard of Oneonta are among the grandchildren of the deceased." [The Otsego Farmer & Republican (Cooperstown, NY), Sept. 9, 1921, p. 7]
