This infant-sized grave with no discernible markings is located behind and slightly to the left of the church, with the graves of Lula Belle Flowers (1892-1896) (d/o William & Mary,) William Flowers (1867-1940,) Mary (Scarborough) (Mrs. Wm) Flowers (1875-1963,) and Rebecca (Flowers) Cook (1896-1966) (daughter of William & Mary Flowers.)
I believe that the infant buried in this grave was the child of William and Mary Flowers, and that s/he was born and died between 1900 and 1910, probably after 1902.
The 1900 US Census enumeration for the family shows Mr. and Mrs. Flowers and three daughters (Nancy S, age 5; Rebecca, age 3; and Willie, age 1) and states that Mrs. Flowers had given birth to four children, one of whom had died. That deceased child would be Lula Belle (1892-1896.)
The family's 1910 US Census enumeration shows Mr. and Mrs. Flowers with four daughters (Nancy, age 15; Rebecca, age 13; Willie, age 11; and Mary, age 9) and states that Mrs. Flowers has birthed six children, two of whom have died.
Thus, Mrs. Flowers gave birth to two children between 1900 and 1910: Mary (b. ca. 1901,) and an unidentified child who died before 1910. The placement of this little grave with Mr. and Mrs. Flowers and two of their children, and the information from the two US Census reports, leads me to believe that the grave is that of another Flowers infant.
