CARLOTA FLORES BARELA, age 85, of Las Cruces, passed away early Saturday morning, June 26, 2004 at Mountain View Regional Medical Center, surrounded by her family and friends. She went to be with her Lord, which was her life ambition. Carlota was born in the small village of Dona Ana on September 29, 1918 to Pedro and Maria Garcia Flores.

All who knew Carlota valued her deep faith and loving nature. Many friends and relatives as well as strangers went to her because of her strong faith and thoughtful words of encouragement. Her prayers touched many lives. The sorrow at our loss can only be replaced by the many fond memories of those who knew and loved her. The true spirit of Jesus was in the heart of our beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was an active member and faithful prayer warrior at Living Waters Assembly of God until her passing. We ask for your prayers and our deep loss. We will miss you 'Nani'.

Carlota left behind four daughters, Daisy Rodriguez and husband Bobby, Connie Martinez and husband Joe of Youngsville, NM, Dorothy Lucero and husband Eloy, and Pauline Sanchez and husband Mike; two sons, Gilbert Barela and wife Olivia of and Albert Barela; one sister Carmen Valdez and husband Arthur all of Las Cruces. Other survivors included nineteen grandchildren; Cindy and Larry Martinez, Jr., Kathy Ortega, Rick, Raymond and Ryan Lucero, Steven and Stephanie Sanchez, David, Shelia, Nathan, Daniel, Albert Barela, Jr., Gilbert, Gabriel, Gerald, Gary, Greg and Geremy Barela as well as twenty-four great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She also left behind special friends and relatives, Sylvia Estrada, Annie Mae Polanco, Dolores Garcia, Sergio Flores and Margie Barela.

Her parents, one sister, Elena Flores, one grandson, Jaime Martinez and her husbands, Daniel Espalin, who died during World War II, and her second husband Alberto R. Barela, also a veteran, preceded her in death.

The Funeral service was held at the Living Waters Assembly of God Church, with Pastor Felix O. Gonzales, officiating. Concluding service and interment followed at the Masonic Cemetery where she will be laid to rest.
