Mrs. Sarah Flewellen Carter, 97, a long time resident of Eufaula, died peacefully Tuesday, July 24.
The last 14 years of her life Mrs. Carter resided at Oak Park Retirement Home in Auburn. She was the devoted wife of the late O.B. (Burnette) Carter Sr. for 60 years until the time of his death in 1994. O.B. Carter was the former superintendent of the Eufaula City Schools.
Born on July 20, 1915, Sarah was the daughter of the late Louise Sparks Flewellen and Robert Hardeway Flewellen and the niece of former Alabama Governor Chauncey Sparks. Sarah had two siblings, her identical twin sister, the late Mary Flewellen Connor and the late Robert (Booty) Hardeway Flewellen. Sarah graduated from Eufaula High School with the highest average in her class in English. She went on to attend Huntingdon College with her sister Mary in Montgomery.
Sarah was a member of the First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and was active in the Women's Missionary Society. She served her community as a member of the Christ Child Circle. Her love of reading led her to join the Lanier Club where she participated in monthly book reviews. But every Friday afternoon, rain or shine, you could always find Sarah at the "Friday Crowd" drinking coffee and visiting with old friends.
Sarah is survived by her four children: Dr. O.B. (Buddy) Carter (Nan) of Albany; Sarah (Sally) Carter Rehfield of Lexington, Ky.; Louise (Tec) Carter Keller (Bob) of Jonesboro, Ga.; Earnesteen (Earnie) Carter Wade (Sam) of Tallassee; eight grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, July 27 at 2 p.m. Family and friends are invited to attend. Chapman Funeral Home of Eufaula is directing.
In lieu of flowers, any donations should be sent to the Carnegie Library of Eufaula.
