Merle G. Smith, 92, of Caldwell, passed away Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, at Nampa Care Center. A viewing will be held at Cloverdale Funeral Home from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 16. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at Cloverdale Memorial Park.
Merle was born Jan. 9, 1916, in American Falls, Idaho. Her childhood was spent on a 5,000-acre wheat ranch near Raft River. Merle would ride her horse, Pop, to school carrying a rifle to shoot coyotes. She graduated from Rupert High School in 1934.
Merle married LaVon Gardener in 1935 and had one daughter, MerVon. After a divorce, she spent WWII raising her daughter as a retoucher, color artist and receptionist for Fox Studios in Boise. Later married to Virgil Parker, Merle became co-owner in opening a well known Boise camera store. They also created Parker Portraits Studio. A daughter, Ila, and son, Jay, were born of this union.
Paul D. Smith and Merle were married Aug. 15, 1959. They were loving partners in three successful photo-finishing businesses, Star Photo, Paul Smith Color Lab and a one-hour photo on State Street in Boise. Merle and Paul retired from their businesses to Caldwell in 1991. They spent their leisure time as rock hounds, artifact and antique collectors. Merle and Paul had 50 years of love and companionship.
Merle was a member of the Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile.
She is survived by her husband, Paul D. Smith; daughters, MerVon Badesheim, Ila (Vontress) Cockrum and Diane Hollifield; one son, Jay (Leann) Parker; grandchildren, DeanaKay Badesheim, Dennis Badesheim, Kaleb (Shereen) Cockrum, Kara (Nathan) Owen, Ryan Parker and Casey (Jacki) Parker. Merle was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Mary Fleming and a grandson, David Badesheim.
