Betsy Carlson slipped into the arms of our Lord in Klamath Falls, Ore., on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009, at the age of 60.
With the love and support of her family and friends, Betsy fought and won the cancer battle for many years. Betsy asks you, that when you think of her fight against cancer, please know she never wanted cancer to take her away. Betsy feels that God chose to take her away from her cancer.
One of the children of Anna-Belle (Collins) Frank and Fleet, Betsy was born in Klamath Falls on Feb. 2, 1949. She attended Fremont and Fairview Elementary and Junior High Schools and graduated from Klamath Union High School in 1967. From there, she went to Oregon Institute of Technology and graduated with a degree in dental assisting technology.
She worked for Dr. George Nitschelm for many years. She really enjoyed dentistry and learned great respect for Dr. Nitschelm. After he retired, Betsy worked for Dr. Kelly Mingus. Health reasons required her to retire from dentistry in 2003.
In 1975, she met her first husband Ken Wandell, who was a switchman for the railroad. They were happily married for seven and a half years. On June 26, 1983, Ken died in a drowning accident. Mutual friends set up a blind date for Betsy with Oscar Carlson Sr. in 1987. On Sept. 25, 1987, Betsy and Oscar were married.
Betsy loved her RV and the RV lifestyle, going different places and camping with friends. She always enjoyed reading. But most of all, Betsy enjoyed cleaning her house.
She is survived by the love of her life, Oscar Carlson Sr.; son, Oscar Jr. and his wife, Jennifer Carlson of Battleground, Wash.; brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Kathy Fleet of Phoenix, Ariz.; sister and brother-in-law, Kathie and Richard Spoon of Klamath Falls; step-daughter, Treasa Loper; three step-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Mickey Whittle; nephews, Rich Whittle, Bill Whittle, and Neal Spoon; niece, Holly Higgins; and several great-nephews and great-nieces.
In addition to her parents and her first husband, Betsy was preceded in death by her sisters, Nancy Whittle and Mary Fleet, both in 2003, and her mother-in-law, Helen Carlson McCune, in 2006.
Cremation was performed and Betsy will be interred at Klamath Memorial Park. A Celebration of Betsy's Life will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009, in the First Presbyterian Church located on the corner of North Sixth and Pine streets.
