GUILFORD- Linwood G. Flanders, 90, died February 9, 2013, at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. He was born August 16, 1922, in Athens, Maine, the son of Clifton and Alice (Leighton) Flanders.

He attended Guilford High School, graduating in June 1940. Linwood served in the US Air Force during WWII from November 1942 thru 1945, 30 months of which was in the South Pacific Theater. He was discharged with the rank of Sergeant.

He began working at Guilford Trust Company in December 1941, and after his military service returned to the bank, until his retirement in 1984, as Vice President of Northeast Bank of Guilford.

Active in town affairs, Linwood served on the Board of Selectmen of the Town for Guilford, and as a Trustee of the Guilford Sangerville Sanitary District. He also served as moderator for town meetings for 51 years. He was a life member of Conner Trafton American Legion Post, serving as Commander in 1946. He was also a life member of Mt. Kineo Masonic Lodge AF & AM, serving as treasurer for many years. He was a member of the Valley Grange, and the Almeda Chapter OES.

Since May of 2012 he resided at Pleasant Meadows in Dover-Foxcroft where he had a Bible study every Wednesday morning. His long time friends, Woody Thompson and Hardy Hibbard visited most Tuesday mornings. In August of 2012 he was surprised by a 90th birthday celebration at the Guilford United Methodist Church.

He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy (Hammond) Flanders in 1999.

He is survived by a son and his wife, Dale and Julia Flanders of Lexington, MA; and a daughter and her husband, Sherry and Brent Wilber of Corinna; 4 grandchildren, Lauren Flanders of Orono, Alice McCormick and her husband, Andrew of MA, Angela Cupples and her husband, Adam, and their children Ethen, Nicholas and Chloe of MA, Peter Wilber and his wife, Vicki and their daughter, Kylie of SC, 2 step-granddaugters, Cortni Callahan of SC, and Nicole King and her husband, Brad and their children Kennedy and Tyson of SC.

Spring burial will be in the Lawn Cemetery in Guilford. (Bangor Daily News posted 2/10/2013)
