Early in the quiet morning of Friday, August 5, 2011, Cleopatra Early Fizer Bruce, of Roanoke, entered into eternal rest. Cleopatra (affectionately known as "SISTER" or "TUTTA") was born in Lynchburg, Va., to the late Cleopatra Early Langley-Fizer and John Henry Fizer. Cleo was the oldest daughter of 15 children. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Willie Beverly Bruce Jr.; and her 14 siblings. In her early years, Cleo Joined St. Paul United Methodist Church in Roanoke, Va. She attended Roanoke City Public Schools, graduating from Lucy Addison High School, Class of 1935.
Cleo studied nursing at Lynchburg Training School in Lynchburg, Va., and received her licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) upon the completion of her studies. Cleo was employed at Burrell Memorial Hospital where she worked in the Pediatric Ward for many years. After retiring from Liberty House Nursing Home, currently Avanté At Roanoke Health Care Center, Cleo worked in the Foster Grandparent Program through the League of Older Americans (LOA) for several years.
After several illnesses, Cleo resided at Avanté. While at Avanté, she enjoyed participating in many planned activities for the residents. In February of 2009, Avanté celebrated Black History Month by honoring Cleo as the oldest resident.
Cleo helped with the rearing of many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews because she felt that family was always a priority. As a result of her concern for the children, there were many obstacles and sacrifices that Cleo faced. However, it was THROUGH GOD'S GRACE AND MERCY and Cleo's STRONG WILL and PERSEVERANCE that she was able to be a blessing to the family for 94 years.
Cleo is survived by her granddaughter, Bevette (Robert) Baxter; great-granddaughters, Nikita Gunn and Tyra Gardner; great-great-granddaughter, D'nahya Meade; nieces, Patricia (Howard) Cooper, long term caregivers, of Roanoke, Va., Stephanie Simmons, of Landover, Md., Ronda Fizer, Sandra FizerJones, JoAnn (Jerome) Hayden, Anita (Rudolph) Ford, Towanda (Rev. Thomas) Penn, Dinah Fralin and Keshia Davis, all of Roanoke, Va.; nephews, Charles D'Lane Fizer, of Lawrenceville, N.J., Lamar Fizer, of Springfield, Ohio, and Sterling Fizer II; grand-nephew, Sterling Fizer III, affectionately known as "G," all of Roanoke, Va.; sister-in-law, Bessie Fizer, of Lawrenceville, N.J.; and a host of cousins, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, and friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 11, 2011, in the Hamlar-Curtis Chapel with the Rev. Carroll C. Carter officiating. Interment will be in Williams Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Friends may call on Wednesday afternoon August 10, 2011, for viewing at Hamlar-Curtis Funeral Home.
