She was one of the "fabulous Klein sisters" of Boston Girls Latin School. After graduating from Simmons College, she earned her Ph.D. in chemistry at MIT in 1936 and married her fellow student, Howard I. Fitz.
She ran a micro-analysis chemistry lab in her home in Needham, Massachusetts while raising three children: Anne, Barbara and Peter. She and her husband shared a love of science and mountain climbing. Following her husband's death in 1963 she traveled most summers to the Alps where she climbed many of the major peaks including the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc.
In addition to her scientific work and devotion to family, she was an accomplished cook, baker and knitter. She especially loved swimming in the ocean.
In later life her companion was Jean Rogers, also a chemist. After many years in Carlisle, they later moved to Rockport, Massachusetts. Carol had three children; Anne Hale, Barbara Wilson (Magnolia, Massachusetts) and Peter Fitz (Ruxton, Maryland), ten grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be sent to the Appalachian Mountain Club, 5 Joy Street, Boston, Massachusetts 02108 or Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan Street, Danvers, Massachusetts 01923 who were so helpful with Carol's care especially in the last few weeks. A private memorial service will be held on her birthday, May 23, in Gloucester, MA.
