Gerhard married Alma Louisa Henrietta Poggemoeller on 10 Apr 1904 at Salem Lutheran Church in Black Jack, St. Louis County, Missouri. He was a farmer in north St. Louis County, and they were the parents of 10 children.
One son, Norman, was killed in action in 1942 while serving in the United States military during World War II.
Alma died in 1946. Gerhard passed away the following year from cancer. He was buried next to his wife on 22 Nov 1947.
