Bonna Louise Bachmann, formerly of Indianapolis, now of Zionsville, Indiana passed away peacefully Monday evening, March 30, 2009. She was 88.
Bonna was born January 4, 1921 in Jalapa, Indiana. She graduated valedictorian from Rock Creek High School near Huntington, Indiana and continued her education at the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Indianapolis where she became a Registered Nurse. While in nursing school she met, and, upon graduation in 1942, married her husband, a young medical resident. She traveled across the country as an army medic's wife and returned to Indiana to give birth before her husband returned from the Philippines in World War II in 1945.
She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker.
Bonna was a member of the Indianapolis Medical Auxiliary and Stansfield Circle during her years in Indianapolis. She was a long time Girls Scout Cookie Chairman for her daughters' troops and participated in many Washington Township school PTAs while her family was growing up.
Bonna enjoyed entertaining and was a terrific cook. There was not a recipe she couldn't improve! She enjoyed sewing and needlework of all types. Her family members and various charities and nursing homes have been left with many warm quilts, afghans, hats and lap blankets by which to remember her. She enjoyed playing bridge and euchre with her friends and family. While living at Hoosier Village she assisted with card games in the Hoosier Village Health Center.
She was also quite a fisherperson and enjoyed fishing trips to Basswood Lake and Sioux Lookout in Canada. She was quick witted and funny…the "Bachmann humor" came from her side of the family.
She is survived by her devoted daughters Nancy B. Meade (John); Peggy J. Dorgan (Robert); Carol A. Bachmann (Ronald Champine); granddaughters Emily K. Meade, and Elyssa M. McCarthy (Chad); grandsons, Christopher K. Cook, D.O. (Heather), Michael Dorgan, Jordan Champine, and Evan Champine; four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and Mary Moore, her lifelong friend.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of over 65 years, Dr. Arnold Bachmann, her parents, Lester and Mary Faye Fite, and her brothers Donald and James Fite.
The family would like to offer special thanks to the wonderful staff of Hoosier Village Health Center; to the doctors and nurses at the St. Vincent's Heart Center who took great care of her during her illnesses; and to her niece Kathy Fite, who was her part-time care taker during the last year of her life.
A memorial service was held April 3rd at Hoosier Village Retirement Community, 5300 W. 96th, Indianapolis, IN, in the Chapel.
Interment: Riverside Cemetery in Cambridge City, Indiana
