Lillian was born in Plymouth, Michigan - the youngest of the six children of Guy and Esther Fisher.

In 1945, she graduated from Harper Hospital School of Nursing in Detroit and on December 20 of that year, married Wesley Bakewell.

Early in their marriage Lil and Wes moved frequently due to Wes's career in the U.S. Navy. Shortly after they were transferred to San Diego in 1957, they bought a home in the Kearny Mesa area. This was home for the next 20 years, even when Wes was homeported in cities other than San Diego. Lil worked part-time as an RN for the County of San Diego, working at Edgemoor Geriatric Hospital and Las Colinas Juvenile Detention Facility. After retirement they built a log house high in the Rockies outside of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, a place much enjoyed by their eight grandchildren. They returned to San Diego in 1997. Lil was a lifelong member of several chapters of Eastern Star and served as Worthy Matron of La Plata Chapter #83 in Durango, Colorado.

She is survived by her four children and their spouses: Kristyne (William) Dresselhaus, Michelle Smith (George) Ludwig, Michael (Diane) Bakewell and Scott (Darlene Fox) Bakewell, as well as by eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and her sister Merle Minehart Dray.

Two months after Wes passed away in 2001, Lil was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. She was fully aware of what this diagnosis meant and for the last 10 years has endured the slowly progressing ravages of this disease bravely and without complaint.
