John was born in Ohio, the son of German immigrants.

He married Ellen Ulery on February 14, 1858 in Morrow County. After their marriage, the couple settled next to Ellen's parents where John was a farmer. There, the couple had two children: Alfred, and Sarah who appeared to have died young.

John and his family were in Winfield, Lake County, Indiana by 1870 where John farmed. The following children are reported in the census records as being born in Indiana: Theodore, Frederick, Jennie, Alva, and Willie.
