PEORIA, IL - Bertha I. "Bertie" Fisher, 83, of Peoria, Ill.,, passed away peacefully at 3:40 a.m. Sunday, April 11, 2010, at her home.

She was a homemaker and loving mother.

She was born in Peoria to Tom and Frances (Scannell) Hopwood on July 27, 1926, in Peoria, Ill. Bertie fell in love with the light of her life, marrying Raymond J. Fisher on June 18, 1943. Ray preceded her in death on July 19, 2000.

Surviving are Sue (Wayne) Hagel of Many, La., Dave (Georgianne) Fisher and Mary (Greg) Ryan of Mapleton, Ill., Glen (Dottie) Fisher and Nancy (Ken) Goewey of Chillicothe, Ill., Peggy (Larry) Stark of Downs, Ill., Jane (Jerry) Hardin of Peoria, Ill., and twins, John (Dodie) Fisher of Washington, Ill., and June (Paul) Rosenbohm of rural Peoria.

She is survived by 31 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three sisters, Mary Jennings of Bridport, Vt., Betty Burdette of Peoria, Ill., and Lois Hitt of Albuquerque, N.M.; and one brother, Ralph Hopwood of Peoria, Ill.

Four brothers, Robert, Joseph, Thomas and Glen Hopwood preceded her in death along with a sister, Virginia Bowden.

Bertie was a faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church. She thoroughly enjoyed attending Mission Circle, Leisure Group and her outings with the Club.

Drop-in visitors, family and friends were always welcome in her home, and there was always plenty of food, fellowship and love to go around. She valued the little things in life, a hand-drawn picture, a card, a handmade cane, a smile, her Fannie May candy, and her dog, Cocoa.

Bertie was a loving, generous and special mom, mother-in-law, sister, sister-in-law, grandma, great-grandma, great-great-grandma, aunt and friend who always saw the good in people. The way she giggled and how her eyes lit up were special to us all. Immensely proud of all her family, particularly her children and grandchildren, she spoke openly of all their accomplishments, awards, and most importantly, their character. The good Lord allowed Bertie to visit her sister in Vermont with three of her daughters just two weeks ago, a blessing for which we are immensely thankful.

Although she is gone from our lives, she will live forever in our hearts.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 15, 2010, at St. John Lutheran Church in Bartonville. The Rev. Barbara J. Ziah will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 14 at St. John Lutheran Church and one hour prior to the funeral service. Burial will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to OSF Hospice, CaringBridge or charity of the donor's choice in Bertie's name.

Lenz Service of Lacon is in charge of arrangements.
