The 318th Regiment of the 80th Division had been organized at Camp Lee, Virginia in September 1917. The Division was made up of draftees called from Virginia, West Virginia and eastern Pennsylvania -- hence the nickname "Blue Ridge Division."

The Regiment arrived overseas in May 1918 and first saw action in July. It took a prominent part in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive of September and October 1918, losing more than 900 officers and men killed or wounded.
