Lois was born to parents Byron Russell Barber and Edith Perry.
She was an accomplished cellist and pianist, she was a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. She taught privately, also at Duquesne University and the Pittsburgh Musical Institute.
She married widower Raymond Nielander Fischer September 30, 1978 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
