Physician, businessman. Firmenich was a well known physician in Buffalo who later started a starch company with his two sons. After the death of his son Frank in 1888 the family moved to chicago. There, Firmenich opened Firmenich Manufacturing Company, New Process Starch. The company later moved to Peoria, Illinois.
Frank is also buried here, along with Joseph's wife Marie Louise, and another child, George. The cremated ashes of Joseph's other daughter, Emma Louise Firmenich Hull were placed inside the tomb of her mother.
The three figures in the statue atop the tomb are said to represent faith, hope, and charity.
