Verna Florence was born in Texas to Edwin Benjamin and Genarah Catherine (Beckham) Finley. She moved to the Coquille Valley as a young girl and remained for the rest of her life.
She attended schools in Riverton and Coquille, traveling there and home by riverboat on the Coquille River.
She graduated from Oregon Normal School in Monmouth, Oregon June 13, 1928.
She taught at many schools including Valley View, Fairview, Coos River, Two Mile, and Washington. She was completely dedicated to education. She recognized individual talents and gifts of her students and spoke of them many years after.
Verna was very intelligent and loved to learn new things. She enjoyed watching and identifying all the different birds that visited her back yard. She knew the migration patterns and habits of most of them. She grew a big garden and used lady bugs for aphid control years before most people had ever heard of it. She experimented with the colors of her many hydrangeas and figured out how to amend the soil to get the shades she wanted.
She was a member of Pioneer Methodist Church, the Retired Teachers Association, and the Coquille Grange.
Survivors include her sons, Darrel, Edwin, and Emory, her daughter, Virginia, her sisters Minnie Stone of Coquille and Bess Hockema of Pistol River, and three grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Darrell, her parents, her brothers Hugh, Guy, Cince, and Zed Finley.
