Arthur James Finks, born January 14, 1894 in Shelby County, Illinois he had three brothers (Isaac, Lonnie, Cleo) and three sisters (Bessie, Bertha, Okla), and was the first born son of Silas and Mary Elizabeth (Steele) Finks of German and Irish descent.
After getting an education that qualified Arthur to teach school, he found himself needed at home to help with farm work. When his younger brothers were old enough to help their parents, Arthur came to Iowa in 1918 where he found employment on the James T. Fleming farm.
During World War I, Arthur saw trench-line duty in France and Germany. After a devastating onslaught, he was reported missing in action. Traveling under the cover of darkness and eating discarded vegetables, Arthur finally arrived safely back in camp. He was one of fourteen survivors in his Division. A promptly dispatched letter to his parents informed them that he was alive.
Following his discharge from the service in early 1919, Arthur returned home to Illinois first and then again to Iowa where he found employment with J. Wilson Fleming, brother to James T. Fleming. Since the Fleming farm had a tenant house, Arthur returned home to Illinois to marry Forest Vesta Corley on June 27, 1920. Forest was one of twin daughters born on June 11, 1902.
In 1921, Arthur and his brother Isaac became partners and share renters of the 240-acre Fleming farm located eight-miles west of Reinbeck, Iowa. Cash rent at that time was $16 per acre.
The following year the brothers relocated to the Matthias Stoakes farm east of Traer, Iowa in Section 8 of Clark Township. The Finks remained on that farm for two years before moving nearby to the William Stewart farm in 1924.
For 23 years Arthur and Isaac rented the Steward land, hopeful of an opportunity to purchase the 240-acres. That became possible when the farm became estate property in 1947. The brothers later added additional tracts.
On that farm along Highway 8, Arthur lived out the remainder of his active farming years. It was there he witnessed the birth of his only daughter, Betty June, born on August 23, 1927. Six years prior, a son had been born but died at birth. He was buried in the Reinbeck Cemetery.
Betty graduated from Traer High School and married Richard Harrison Crawford on November 20, 1948.
Arthur, long affected from the ravages of World War I, died on December 27, 1973. Forest died on August 25, 1981. Both are buried in the Buckingham Cemetery near Traer, Iowa.
