Morton E. Finch, 72, retired president of American Snuff Company, died early today after a lengthy illness. His death came three months after he had stepped down from heading the company for nine years. Previously he had been vice-president and secretary-treasurer of the firm. Finch was active in Methodist, Boy Scout, and other civic work. A native of Boydton, Va., he was educated in Virginia public schools, New York preparatory school, and New York law school. He was a secretary and law clerk in the law department of the American Tobacco Company in New York from 1899 to 1912 when he moved to Memphis. His widow, a daughter, and a son survive. Services for Morton E. Finch, retired president of American Snuff Co. and active worker in civic and Boy Scout circles, will be held at 3 this afternoon at J.T. Hinton & Son Fuenral Home. Dr. N.C. McPherson Jr. and Dr. Alfred Loaring Clark will officiate and burial will be in Forest Hill. Mr. Finch died at 12:50 yesterday morning at Baptist Hospital, less than four months after his retirement as head of the first with which he had been affiliated since 1912. He was 72. First employed as a law clerk in the old American tobacco Co. in 1899, Mr. Finch came to Memphis in 1912 upon dissolution of that firm. Mr. Finch was born at Boydton, Va., the son of the late Langston Easley Finch and Tabitha Walker Boyd Finch. Attending public schools in Virginia, Mr. Finch also was educated in the New York Preparatory School and was graduated from New York University Law School in 1902. He had gone to work at 12 to make his own living. In 1902 Mr. Finch accompanied J.B. Duke, founder of the American Tobacco Company, to London as his personal secretary. He remained in the law department of that firm as assistant to W.W. Fuller, counsel for Mr. Duke, until 1912. Mr. Finch accompanied the late Martin J. Condon to Memphis as legal counsel and secretary and treasurer of the American Snuff Co., which position he held until Jan. 1, 1935, when he was elected vice president. Mr. Finch was elected president of the firm in March 1940. He retired last June 30. Offices of the concern will be closed this afternoon in respect to Mr. Finch. For many years Mr. Finch was active in Boy Scout work, having served for 10 years as a member of the troop committee for Troop No. 5. In 1929 he was elected secretary of the Chickasaw Boy Scout Council. Mr. Finch was admitted to the New York Bar in 1904 and the Tennessee Bar in 1912. A member of both the American and Tennessee Bar Association, Mr. Finch was for many years a member of the Industrial Advisory Committee of the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis. He enjoyed golf and was a member of the Memphis Country Club. He lived at 565 Goodwyn. Mr. Finch was a member of the Board of Stewards at St. John's Methodist Church. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Katherine McIntyre Braden Finch; a daughter, Mrs. Virginia F. Waller, Memphis; a son, Braden L. Finch of Corona Del Mar, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. W.L.
