Mr. Francis A. Fields, Sr., 84, of 171 Bull Hill Road, Lanesborough, died Sunday, September 26, 2010 at Berkshire Medical Center.
Born in Pittsfield on November 9, 1925, he was the son of the late Alfred and Rose Zwinglestein Fields.
He was a lifelong resident of Pittsfield and a 1943 graduate of Pittsfield High School, where he was co-captain of the football team. Mr. Fields also attended the former Cranwell Preparatory School.
He and his wife Joan owned and operated the former Friendly Variety Store in Lanesboro for thirty-five years. He was employed as an expediter at the General Electric Co., retiring in 1985 after thirty-eight years of service.
He was a World War II US Marine Corp Veteran seeing action against the enemy at Okinawa. He was honorably discharged on August 6, 1946. He enjoyed travelling extensively throughout the United Sates and Hawaii. He loved the ocean and enjoyed taking many trips to Misquamicut. He was a member of the GE Quarter Century Club and pensioners and a communicant of St. Charles Church.
His wife, the former Joan McCuminskey, whom he married on May 8, 1948 in St. Marks Church, died September 30, 1998.
He leaves five sons, Michael F. Fields of Lanesboro, Francis A. Fields Jr. of Pittsfield, Steven F. Fields of Rohnert, California, Matthew F. Fields and Daniel F. Fields both of Lanesboro, two daughters Patricia F. Gallant of Pittsfield and Teresa F. Fields of Agawam, a sister Rosemary Hatch of Pittsfield. Mr. Fields was a loving grandfather to his ten grandchildren, Jennifer, David, Adam, Megan, Mackenzie, Melanie, Shannon, Kylie, Connor, and Dylan. A beloved great-grandfather to Jeffrey, Patrick, Thomas, Samuel, Dax, and Tobin. Mr. Fields was pre-deceased by a sister Barbara Reagan.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, September 30, 2010 at 9:00 a.m. from the DWYER FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. in St. Charles Church.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held at DWYER FUNERAL HOME on Wednesday, September 29, 2010 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
