Henry graduated from Williams College on 15 August 1838. He graduated from Windsor Theological in Windsor, Connecticut with a divinity degree on 11 August 1841. He was further educated at Yale University and was a Presbyterian minister in St. Louis, Missouri from 1842 to 1847. He next lived in Paris, France, where he befriended Henriette DesPortes and married her on 20 May 1851. He again served a Presbyterian church as pastor in West Springfield, Massachusetts from 1851 to 1854. In 1854, he became the editor of the national Presbyterian paper, "The Evangelist." He was also a noted author. After Henriette died, he married second to Frances E. Dwight on 9 November 1876.
