Isabella Bertram

The funeral service for Isabella Bertram, 100, Valley City, ND will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 10, 2010 at Epworth United Methodist Church, Valley City. Rev. Dan Bader will officiate and burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Valley City. She died at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City on April 7, 2010 under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Visitation will be on Friday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.

Isabella Brown Fiedler was born on September 23, 1909 in Bathgate, ND, the daughter of Frank and Isabella (Brown) Fiedler. She grew up in Bathgate and graduated from high school there. Following her graduation, she went on to attain her standard degree at Valley City State College in Valley City, ND. After her schooling, she worked as the head teller at Grafton State Bank.

In 1945 she married Edward H. Bertram. They made their home on a farm near Valley City. Ed died in 1950 and Isabella continued to live and work on the farm until entering the Sheyenne Care Center in 2006.

She traveled to the Holy Land and visited Scotland many times. Her needlework was fantastic, her embroidery was award winning.

Isabella was a member of Salem United Methodist Church near Valley City, until it closed. She then transferred her membership to Epworth United Methodist Church in Valley City. While at Salem, she served many years as a Senior High Sunday School Teacher and was honored for her years as Superintendent of Bible School.

She was a charter member of the Board of Directors of the North Dakota WinterShow Women's Division where she served many years as the treasurer. She also belonged to the Pioneer Daughters, BPW, WCTU, and was a life member of the VFW Auxiliary. In addition to all of her other activities, Isabella was a member of the Woodbine Chapter of the Eastern Star and was a Past Worthy Matron.

Isabella is survived by her son, Bill of Valley City; daughter, Mary Schradick of Wahpeton, ND; grandchildren, Elizbeth (Derek) Abrahams, Eleanor (Nathan) Engelby, and Hannah Schradick; great grandchildren, Isabella and John Abrahams and Leah Engelby; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Leah; son-in-law, Jerry; brothers, Albert, George, Jackson, Arthur, Hamilton, and Robert; and sisters, Barbara, Mary, and Margaret.

Funeral arrangements for Isabella have been entrusted to Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel.
