Mrs. Mercy Behee Dead
Mrs. Mercy Behee, aged 93, one of the oldest women of the city, died at 2 o'clock on Saturday afternoon, of general debility. She has been quite ill for more than a week, although until very recently she has maintained a remarkable constitution.
Mrs. Behee was born in Pittston April 7, 1828. She was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Fell, and a niece of Judge Jesse Fell. She has lived at 158 North Main street for sixty-nine years. Her mother died when she was 2 years old and her father when she was 8. Until she became of age she lived with Mr. and Mrs. Lord Butler, residing at Butler alley and North Main street.
When she was 20, she married John Behee, a blacksmith of Hanover Township, who built the old brick house on North Main street where Mrs. Behee has lived so long.
Possessed of an excellent memory, and an interesting faculty of description, Mrs. Behee could tell of many things that hapened out of the memory of many venerable Wilkes-Barreans.
She was the mother of eight children of whom seven are still living. They are: Mrs. C. A. Rex, Mauch Chunk; George Behee, of Chase; Miss Ruth S. Behee, J. L. Behee, Mrs. Ella Conner, Miss Anna. Behee and Daniel S. Behee, of Wilkes-Barre. There are also ten grandchildren and seven great grand-children.
The funeral will he held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30. The services will be in charge of Rev. A. E. Piper of First M. E. Church, of which Mrs. Behee was a member for more than fifty years. Interment will be in Hollenback Cemetery.
