Betty J. Balk, 70, of Thomson, died Friday at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 1, 2012 at Second Reformed Church in Fulton, IL. The Rev. Scott Stephan, Pastor of Second Reformed Church, Fulton, IL, will officiate. Visitation is from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at the Fulton Chapel of the Bosma-Renkes Funeral Home. Interment will be at Fulton Township Cemetery in Fulton, IL.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society and Second Reformed Church.

Betty was born December 16, 1941, in Fulton, IL, to Leonard and Etta (Valk) Feldt. She was educated in the Thomson Grade Schools and graduated from York Community High School in Thomson, IL in 1960

She married Edwin P. Balk on June 16, 1961 in Fulton.

Betty was a homemaker and assisted her husband in owning and operating Balk Trucking in Thomson, IL.

She was a member of Second Reformed Church where she sang with the "Sunbeams," singing at the local nursing homes. Betty enjoyed gardening and participating in the walks for the "Race for the Cure" and many other walks. She also enjoyed helping at her son and daughter in law's bakery, Jaarsma Bakery in Pella, IA.

Survivors include husband, Edwin; one daughter, Donna (Michael) Mangler, Savanna, IL; four sons, David (Kristi) Balk, Pella, IA, Jeff Balk, Thomson, IL, Jim (Tammy) Balk, Thomson, IL, Brian (Beth) Balk, Thomson, IL; 10 grandchildren; three step grandchildren; one step great grandson; and one sister Doris Rosenbalm, Oregon, IL.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one brother, Kenneth Jay Feldt in infancy. -
