Birth: Aug. 29, 1919
New York
New York County (Manhattan)
New York, USA
Death: Aug. 24, 2010

Lester Feinstein, resident of Saratoga, age 91, was born and educated in New York City. He relocated to Palo Alto in 1954. He worked as a Mathematician, Engineer and Physicist at General Electric, Stanford Research Institute and NASA's Ames Research Center, from which he retired as a Senior Research Scientist. He served honorably in the Navy during World War II as the Radar Officer aboard the cruiser USS Reno and survived a torpedo attack in the Pacific that caused heavy casualties. Mr. Feinstein was a contributor to the early days of the civil rights movement in the 1960's as a chairman of the social action committee of Temple Beth Am in Palo Alto. Until his health prohibited it, he enjoyed backpacking, sailing and walking and remained a dedicated fan of Opera and Classical music. He was an avid reader of scientific and technical journals and outside of his scholarly interests, was a keen observer of social and political issues. His wit and wry humor will be missed. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Menchine Feinstein, of Saratoga; a son, Howard Feinstein of Bethesda, Maryland; a daughter, Jane Crabb, of Santa Cruz; Stepsons; Christopher and William Menchine; four grand children and four great grandchildren. At his request there will be no services or memorial, but friends may make a small contribution in his name to Oxfam or the charity of their choice.
