Birth: Jan. 3, 1836
Death: Sep. 28, 1906

For more than 50 years, Faust owned and operated the most famous restaurant in the history of St. Louis. He came to St. Louis and worked as an ornamental plasterer until 1862, when he established a restaurant in South St. Louis. Successful from the start, the restaurant was moved uptown, but burned in 1877. It was rebuilt immediately and became known as the "Delmonico's of the West." In 1878 Faust went to the Paris Exposition where he puchased his own electric power plant for $15,000 and installed it in his restaurant. This was the first electric illumination in St. Louis. The restaurant became internationally known, but closed in 1916. Ten years after Faust's death, it was purchased by John Queeny, founder of the Monsanto Company. (bio by: Connie Nisinger)
