Mrs. Elvira Backus, widow of the late Samuel Backus, passed away at her home in Flackville, Feb 15, 1920, aged 72 years and 3 months. She was in her usual health Saturday and made several calls. Sunday morning when the neighbors did not see her about her home, they investigated and found she had passed away, apparently having died in her sleep. She had been afflicted with heart trouble for some time.

Elvira Farrar was born in the town of Lisbon, Nov 13, 1847, and was married to Samuel Backus March 26, 1873, and moved to a farm near Heuvelton. Thirteen years ago she came to Flackville where she resided until the death of Mr. Backus March 19, 1917. After his death she lived in Ogdensburg about one year. Last July she came to Flackville where she has since lived.

She is survived by one son, Allen Backus, and one daughter, Mrs. James Thompson, both of Flackville, also two brothers, Robert Farrar of Libson, and Fred Farrar of Worcester, Mass, and one sister, Mrs. Lucy Dalrymple of Lisbon and six grandchildren. A daughter, Mrs. Leslie Smithers died on October 21, 1918 and a son died in infancy.

Mrs. Backus was a woman of fine personality, a good mother and grandmother, and a kind neighbor. She will be sadly missed by her many friends. She was a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal church for many years. The funeral services were held from the M.E. church at Flackville, February 19th. Rev. Langford, Pastor of the Presbyterian Church, officiated. Interment was made in Heuvelton cemetery.
