ESTHERVILLE - Funeral services for Mary Lou Cornelius, 75, of Armstrong, will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, Feb. 22, at the United Methodist Church in Armstrong with Pastor Lyndon Roesler officiating. Interment will be at Armstrong Grove Cemetery, Armstrong. She died Friday, Feb. 19 at the Good Samaritan Society in Estherville.
Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 28, at the Henry-Olson-Funeral Chapel in Armstrong.
Mary Lou (Adams) Cornelius, the daughter of Blaine "Red" and Mildred (Overholt) Farmer, was born June 20, 1934, in Ravenna, Ohio.
She was raised in Columbiana and graduated from Columbiana High School in Columbiana. She was involved in marching band, choir and theater productions, one in which she impersonated Kate Smith.
On Oct. 30, 1954, Mary Lou was united in marriage to Duane Cornelius in Columbiana. After their marriage the couple made their home in Columbiana until 1958, when they moved to Armstrong to make their home and raise their family. While residing in Armstrong Mary Lou held several jobs including operating Cornelius Variety and gift shop for seven years and she was assistant manager of Kum and Go for 10 years. These positions were excellent for Mary Lou do to her love for people and visiting with all she made contact with. In 2002, Mary Lou sustained a stroke and six months later was diagnosed with rectal cancer. Mary Lou was bound and determined not to allow this to slow her down. While residing at Good Samaritan Society she was involved in many activities including playing cards, constructing several craft projects, serving0 as president of the resident council and greeting and visiting with other residents and staff. Mary Lou was also involved in community activities such as the Armstrong Business Club, 4th of July Parade Committee, Post Prom Committee and President of the Armstrong Bowling Association. Duane died Feb. 8, 2008.
Mary Lou was an active and longtime member of United Methodist Church in Armstrong, being involved in circle and assisting in youth group activities; and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
Left to cherish Mary Lou's memory are her son, Duane Cornelius of Milford; daughters, Della Ruth Phillips and her husband, Jim of Kingsman, Arizona; Sherry Lou of Lincoln, Neb.; Kay Lynn of Omaha, Neb.; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and sister, Kathy Rickenbach and her husband, Rick of Bethel Park, Penn.
Preceding Mary Lou in death were her husband, daughter, Debra Lyn and her parents.
