Helen Everest Douglas

Helen was born in Grangeville, Idaho to George Everest and Ethel Bourland Everest on her father's birthday, March 7, 1921, the youngest of five children. S

he set goals early in her life. She wanted independence and pursued further education after graduating from the University of Idaho. Among her favorite jobs were working as Registrar at the Academy of Art in San Francisco and as coordinator of visitor information sales for the National Park Service in Northern California. Classes at the College of Marin led her to painting and choral singing, and also to service on the Emeritus College Board.

Another goal, to be a part of a family, bloomed when she married Lawrence Douglas and had three children: daughters, Cheryl of San Rafael and Anita of Oregon City, and son Craig of San Rafael. Marriages brought fine company and support from her sons-in-law Jeff Kent and Phillip Knapp. Later she had the joy of bonding closely with four wonderful grandchildren, Alexander, Travis, Neve and Kira. It was not only a goal, but her nature that led her to develop and keep deep friendships: from high school friends (both named Helen), to college friends, cousins and co-workers, and from neighbors to her P.E.O. sisters and the Monday sketching group. All five family members became involved in preparing for and leading Sierra Club Outings. On one in Alaska in 1967, Lawrence accidently fell to his death.

In later years, after her children were grown, Helen travelled with friends or family to Canada, Europe and Asia (studying Japanese and Chinese languages and art in preparation for the Asian trips). Throughout her life she took pleasure in exploring the history of her family going back to the American Revolution and the landing of the Mayflower. Her love of literature, poetry and art kept her actively reading, writing, painting, and participating in her book club. Helen lived in Mill Valley until 1975 when she moved to San Rafael where she died with loving family close by on November 4, 2011, still living independently in her own home.

A celebration of her life is being planned for late December. If you would like to be notified of the details please contact [email protected] or one of her children. Anyone wishing to make a contribution in memory of Helen is encouraged to send a donation to a favorite environmental or educational organization.
