Mildred Sevena Eustice Barnes, 87, of Chattanooga, TN, passed away on Sunday, January 8, 2012, at a local hospital. She was born and lived in Soddy, TN, to parents, Roy and Ethel Eustice, now deceased.

She was educated in schools in Soddy, TN and graduated from Soddy Daisy High School in 1942. She always claimed to be fortunate that the High School Principal, Mr. Brown, acquired new typewriters which she learned to type flawlessly in addition to learning accurate shorthand skills. With these qualifications, she obtained employment at Oak Ridge Y-12 Nuclear Plants in the Personnel Department, where she found an opening for an Executive Secretary to the top Director of Y-12 war production. She applied for the job and made a good impression of a young highly skilled, educated person. Her performance was very acceptable to the Director who headed up several other Plants in the Y-12 Group. One Day in History, her Director phoned her and advised that he was tied up in a meeting, and asked her to phone all of the other Sub-Directors in the Y-12 Group and tell them that the first experimental Atomic Bomb had exploded in New Mexico. This event was of World Importance.

After WW II, she obtained employment as Executive Secretary in several industrial companies, and then ten years as Secretary to her husband, Erhardt J. Barnes, CPA now retired.

Survivors are her husband, Erhardt J. Barnes; daughter, Janice Kulovitz and son-in-law, Louis Kulovitz; granddaughters are Dr. Laura Houston, MD, of Charleston, SC and Holly Houston, of Washington, DC; nieces are Rhonda Becker and Rae Ann McCurry, of Knoxville, TN; and nephew, Raymond Upton, of Jacksonville, FL; also deceased older sister, Bernice Cofer.

Mildred took pride in her personal appearance. She was always clean and dressed well. She was a perfect lady and always friendly and respectful of others.

She was a devout Christian and tried to maintain perfect attendance at Sunday Church Services at Grace Episcopal Church. She had a strong faith in God and sought guidance from Jesus in all of her activities. She realized that she had much to be thankful for, and thanked Jesus every day.

Visitation will be from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday followed by Church Services at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 10, 2012, at Grace Episcopal Church, 20 Belvoir Avenue, Chattanooga, TN 37411.

Burial will follow at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Arrangements are by the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 404 South Moore Road East Ridge, TN.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations may be made to Grace Episcopal Church.
