Phyllis E. Akers, 66, a lifetime resident of Chesapeake, passed away Sunday, February 15, 2009 in her home, surrounded by family. She was the daughter of the late Pete Etheridge and Emma Q. Oakes and step-father, Thomas J. Oakes. She was the widow of Johnny Lee Akers. She was a member of Peoples Baptist Church. She was Vice President of Princess Anne Builders, Inc. for 25 years until her retirement in 2007. She was a devoted mother, nanny, sister, aunt and friend to all who knew her. Phyllis was the 2007 Chesapeake Mother of the Year by the Indian River Ruritan Club. She is survived by three loving daughters; Donna Stutzman and husband Wayne, Gina Hemperley and Kathy Cotterell and husband, Mike; six grandchildren; April Klinger and husband, Kasea, Jaye Stutzman and fiancÚ, Courtney Alder, Michael John Cotterell, Matthew Hemperley, Tyler Cotterell, Alexis Cotterell, and two great-granddaughters, Marissa and Kassidy Klinger all of Chesapeake; a sister of Reno, NV; her beloved K-9 companion, Dehlia.
Funeral: Thursday, February 19, 2009 at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. Rev. Michael Wetherington will officiate. Interment in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens.
The family would like to thank Wanda and Toni of Sentara Hospice for their loving care they provided for our mother. The family would also like to extend their deepest appreciation to People's Baptist Church and Pastor Wetherington for their prayers, love and encouragement during this difficult time.
