Virginia "Ginny" Estell Davis passed away peacefully at her home in Charbonneau on Dec. 22, 2008, with her family at her side.
She was born to Anna and Theora Estell in Garrison, N.D., on Sept. 12, 1922. After she graduated from high school in Greenfield, Iowa, she moved to Portland where she met Francis H. Davis. They were married on July 1, 1942, in Vancouver. The couple soon moved to Pampa, Texas, AFB where Francis served in World War II; he was promoted to lieutenant and was a B17 and B29 pilot. Her role as a mother began in 1943 with the birth of their first son, John. In 1945 their second son, Gene, was born. After the war ended, Francis and Virginia returned to Oregon, built their homestead at the site of the original Stafford Post Office where they raised cattle and farmed grain. Virginia worked at First National Bank while working on her bachelor's degree in home economics which she received from Marylhurst in 1958. She taught at Ainsworth School in Portland for the next three years. She completed her master's in counseling at Oregon State College in 1961 and was a counselor at Cleveland High School from 1961 until she retired in 1984. After Francis passed away in 1978, Virginia continued running the family farm and spent her free time at her Cannon Beach home until she moved to SpringRidge Charbonneau in 2000. She loved traveling, cooking, gardening, walking on the beach, listening to country music, collecting art and teddy bears, and spending time with her family.
Virginia was preceded in death by her brothers, Paul Estell, U.S. Marine Corps, fighting in Guadalcanal (1942); and Quintin Estell, JD of Silverton (2008). She is survived by her sons, John F. Davis (Marilyn) of Aurora and Gene Davis (Barbara) of West Linn; grandchildren, Debra Davis, M.D., Matthew Davis, Sarah Harwood, John B. Davis and Michael Davis; and her great-grandchildren, Emily, Ryan, Tyler, Colin and Noah. She was also preceded in death earlier this year by her companion of 18 years, Bill Schaber.
A memorial service will be held at Mt. Calvary Chapel on Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests remembrances to OPB or educational charities. Arrangements by Crown Memorial Center, Tualatin.
