Louis Eschenburg, Sr.

Louis Eschenburg, Sr., died Monday night, March 16, 1913. He was born in Pritzwald, Brandenburg, Germany March 23, 1835. He came to America in September 1852 at age 17 after a 13-week voyage and landed in New Orleans from where the family moved to Galveston and later to Houston. From Houston they moved to Frelsburg and in the year 1854 settled in High Hill at a place called Blum Hill where he operated a saloon west from the public cemetery just west of the north-south stage road.
In 1858 he was married to Helene Katherine Siems who, on August 24, 1895 preceded him in death. To this union 14 children were born, seven dying in their youth. Three sons and four daughters survive him. The sons: William, Louis, Jr., C.J. The daughters: Mrs. Alvina Dieringer, Mrs. Emilie Sander, Mrs. Helena Zuerka and Mrs. Frank Mueller of Bluff.
during the Civil War he joined Company A, 3rd Texas Infantry under Captain Sam Alexander and served throughout the war.
In 1867 he engaged in the blacksmith trade at Content, Colorado County and conducted this business for 22 years. He then moved to High Hill again where he remained for the rest of his life.
