Elvy William Eschberger went home to The Lord on Wednesday, April 30 at the age of 91. Elvy was born to William and Mary Eschberger in Coupland, Texas on August 19, 1922. One of six children including two brothers, Calvin and Jimmy, and three sisters Florence Kruse, Gladys Ging, and Evelyn Prinz. Elvy grew up on a farm outside of Coupland and graduated from the Coupland school where he was a member of the six-man football team.

In 1942, at the age of 20, Elvy was one of many men from Williamson County who enlisted in the United States Army. He was sent to train at Camp Adair in Oregon. He was discharged in 1943 after receiving an injury during training and was never deployed overseas during his military career.

Elvy returned to Taylor, Texas and went to work for JC Penney followed by Gellman's Department Store where he was store manager for over 30 years before retiring in 1985. Most everyone in Williamson County knew Elvy because they had purchased a pair of pants from him at some point in their life.

On October 17, 1943, Elvy married Mildred Anna Tham. The couple of 70 years lived happily in Taylor and had two daughters, Cynthia Gayle and Lori Dayle. Elvy loved to travel and took the family on many adventures including trips to Tennessee, Colorado, Canada, and to the Texas coast where Elvy loved to fish.

Elvy had a passion for serving others. He regularly gave of his time and energy in service on various City commissions and was a lifetime member of the Taylor Lion's Club where he set a record for over 60 years of perfect attendance. He was a dedicated and active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. His other passions included gardening, fishing, and wood working. Elvy's contagious smile, sense of humor, and positive spirit will be missed.

Elvy is proceeded in death by his daughter Lori Eschberger who passed away on April 8, 2014, just 22 days prior to Elvy's passing. He is survived by his wife Mildred, daughter Cindy and husband Brunner Grau, four grandchildren, Tiffany Charles and her husband, Richie, Courtney Trujillo and her husband, Marc, Micah Grau and his wife, Mallory, and Priscilla Grau. He is also survived by five great-grandchildren including Chayse and Kacianna Boecker, Elijah and Norah Grau, and Jacob Ray Charles.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, May 3 from 4 - 8 p.m. at Condra Funeral Home and is open to the public. Funeral services will take place at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Taylor at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 4 followed by burial at Taylor Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, the Taylor Lion's Club, or the charity of your choice.
