Born Feb. 14, 1921, in Streator to John C. and Amanda Crook Ernst, he married Virginia Dittus on Nov. 8, 1941, in Peoria. She survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Albert S. Jr. of Algonac, Mich., and James C. of Bellevue; two daughters, Carol Ann Nelson of East Peoria and Connie J. Davis of Hot Springs, Ark.; one brother, Ralph, of Dallas, Texas; and two sisters, Shirley Broyles of Bellevue and Betty J. Helton of Lincolnton, Ga. Two sisters and three brothers preceded him in death.
He was a machinist at Caterpillar Inc. for 36 years, retiring on April 1, 1986. After retiring, he was a tour guide at Caterpillar's Mossville Plant. He also had worked at Newman and Ullman in Pekin for many years.
He also was a seaman first class in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II. He was a member of American Legion Post 979 in Bartonville and United Auto Workers Local 974.
Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery. Military rites will be accorded.
