Agnes "Polly" Louise (Erikson) Deppe, 92, of Spearfish, died December 24, 2012 at Rapid City Regional Hospital. She was born to Olaf and Clara Erikson on a homestead ten miles south of Vivian, SD, on May 16, 1920.
Growing up, she helped take care of brothers and sisters, as well as taking on her share of the chores on the family farm. She worked for another family in Vivian in their home at a young age, and spent a year in Arizona with her sister, where she attended a year of high school. She returned to South Dakota and graduated from Presho High School in 1940.
After graduation, she joined her sister in Watertown, WI, where she met Lloyd Deppe. They were married in 1942, and had a wonderful life together until his passing in 2006. Agnes followed Lloyd around the country to various army bases. At one point, she worked with a phone company in California. After Lloyd returned from serving overseas, they settled in southeastern Wisconsin until 2006, when they moved to Spearfish. Agnes was a homemaker and lovingly raised three children. She also worked outside the home in an ice cream factory, ran a small family business, and was a longtime crossing guard for the local police department. She also took an occasional class at a local technical college. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and gardening. She was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Quilters. She grew up surrounded by music and passed her love of music to her children. She was a woman of faith.
Agnes is survived by her daughter, Susan McKim, Caldwell, Tx; two sons, Danny (Linda) Deppe, Pewaukee, Wi, Doug (Barb) Deppe, Spearfish; two sisters, Hazel Juhnke, Vivian, SD, and Esther Cleland, Rapid City; seven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; 42 nephews and nieces adding to almost 200 members in the two generations following.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, her parents, nine brothers, four sisters, and two nephews.
She is lovingly remembered and forever in our hearts. In lieu of a memorial, quilts will be available for purchase at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with proceeds to benefit the Our Savior's Lutheran Quilters. Memorial services will be Saturday, January 5, 2013, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Spearfish. Inurnment will be Monday, January 7, 2013, at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis. Arrangements are under the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapels & Crematory Services, Spearfish, SD.
