Death came Monday to Lawrence E. Erickson Sr., former manager of Idaho Falls J. C. Penney Department Store and well-known civic leader. He had been admitted to an Idaho Falls hospital only Sunday but had been in failing health for some time.

Mr. Erickson only a couple of weeks ago had been granted a coveted Greater Idaho Falls Chamber of Commerce honorary membership award for his civic contributions.

He had retired as manager with J. C. Penney in November, 1963 after 35 years of service. The past 27 years of which he had served as manager, first at St. Anthony for 13 years, next at Price for four years and finally in Idaho Falls for 10 years.

Mr. Erickson served as general manager for the Community Chest in 1964 and was also president of the Eastern Idaho Knife and Fork Club that same year.

During his 10 years residence in Idaho Falls, he has been a director of the Idaho Falls Chamber of Commerce for the past six years and was twice vice president of that organization.

He was a member of the Idaho Falls Retail Merchants Assn. and has served as its chairman. He was one of the organizers of the Off-Street Parking Assn., has been a director of that organization since its inception, served as president of the organization in 1956, and in his administration much of the space used for public parking by the association was acquired.

Erickson has served as a member of the City Planning Commission for 4.5 years and was vice president of the Mayor's Citizen's Committee, which helps coordinate the efforts of the city administration and the community in public planning.

He has served on the Mayor's Committee to Aid the Handicapped and was a member of the Downtown Property Owners' Assn. in charge of traffic circulation.

A member of the Idaho Falls Rotary Club, he has served on many of its committees. During his residence at St. Anthony, he was president of the club there and served the St. Anthony School Board for a number of years, two terms as its chairman.

He was born Aug. 4, 1903, at Ogden, Utah, the son of A. J. and Amanda Erickson. He attended Ogden schools and Weber Academy in Ogden.

Survivors include a son, Lawrence Erickson Jr., Montpelier; two daughter, Mrs. A. D. (Pattricia) Caine, Alexandria, Va.; and Mrs. Hammon S. (Carole Anne) Cannon, Salt Lake city; two brothers, Gus, Almo, Idaho, and Emery, Burley; four sisters, Mrs. Quinn Wilson, burley, Mrs. Dale Ude, Twin Falls; Mrs. Eldon Gray, Ogden; and Miss Selma Erickson, Chicago, Ill., and 10 grandchildren.
