A tribute to Principal E,Joy Erickson
The flags flew at half-mast last week at the Star Valley Junior High School. A subdued student-body and faculty mourned the death of their principal E. Joy Erickson, who died Monday night from complications to his June liver transplant. Highly respected and loved by the school's staff and students, Mr Erickson will long be remembered for his contribution to the education of thousands during the past two decades in Star Valley.
Principal Erickson was a man of great integrity. His teachers found him supportive and congenial. Though a strict disciplinarian, students respected him and knew his rules and standards were a form of caring. That to abide by regulations was a part of their educations to become a good citizen in our society.
The teachers and students of Star Valley Junior High found him consistent and fair. He was positive in his association with all. His sense of humor was a recourse on which many depended.
With admiration and love for his courageous battle and the many years dedicated to education, we join his family in honoring his memory.

He graduated from Star Valley High School in 1951. He attended Utah State University, obtaining his bachelors degree in 1958 and a master of education in 1970. He served in the Army from 1952-54.

"We have a real empty feeling down here, said Cordell Luthi, acting principal at the junior high. He continued,"It's a great loss to us. He has touched the lives of a lot of people, and that includes students and staff. I can guarantee he has left his mark."
Merna Brown, president of the Star Valley Education Association, attended school with him and taught for 10 years under his administration. She remembers him as "one of the finest individuals. He backed his teachers all t he way and was very very supportive. He never hesitated to let us try something new." She concluded "He was certainly a friend and I admired him so much."
Longtime neighbor and friend Blair Hillstead reflected on his 17 years of teaching with Joy, "He was very well liked as an administrator. As a faculty we have grown because of his administration as much as any faculty in the district. He had a real good rapport with the students. They knew where they stood with him and he disciplined in such a way that they respected him."
Lincoln County School District #2 Superintendent J. Allen Lowe said, "Joy has been about the closest colleague in my entire experience in education. If there has been any administrator that I wanted to bounce anything off, council with, Joy has been that person. We worked closely my first three years because he trained me. I had never been a principal before, I leaned heavily on his experience then and continued to do so after becoming superintendent. I always felt that his advice and counsel were about the best that could be obtained.
"I think Joy was a super administrator and totally dedicated to education." said Rowan Anderson, chairman of the school board. Anderson further pointed out, "He had an ability for discipline that you will never see in another administrator. He took very good care of the school buildings."
Funeral services will be held at the Osmond Three Ward Building tomorrow at 1 p.m. A viewing will be held prior to the services beginning at 11 a.m. The family will meet with friends at the Schwab Mortuary tonight, Dec 4, from 7-9 p.m.
