Helen Epstein, 92, of West Orange died on Oct. 22, 2010. Services were held at Bernheim-Apter-Kreitzman. Rabbis Ronald Kaplan and Zvi Karpel officiated. Born in Poland, Mrs. Epstein was a Holocaust survivor who emigrated to America with her husband and child. She witnessed the atrocities of war and through her conviction and courage made sure that no one would ever forget this genocide. She belonged to Cafe Europa, made up of fellow survivors. For almost two decades Mrs. Epstein resided at the Jewish Federation Plaza in West Orange, where she was a member of the tenants' association. She also helped Rabbi Karpel and Rabbi Kaplan with the Friday Oneg Shabbats. When she was healthier she enjoyed going to the Senior Margulies Center at the JCC in West Orange. She belonged to the Pioneer Women and Na'Amat USA, zionist organizations. She was also a member of Sara Slifer Orthopedic Foundation. Predeceased by her husband, Simon, Mrs. Epstein is survived by her sister, Sala; daughter, Miriam; son-in-law, Harry; granddaughter, Sherry, and her husband, Peter. Memorial contributions may be made to the Jewish Family Service of MetroWest or the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.
