Bert I. Ensign, loving husband, dad, grandpa, uncle, and friend, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2012 at Intermountain Medical Center.

Bert was born August 16, 1928 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Susie Crouch Ensign and Henry Calvin Ensign. He had a family of eight brothers and sisters.

He grew up in Salt Lake City and went to West High School; he was a member of the LDS Church. He married Waneta Knowles on September 10, 1949 in Elko, NV. They had sixty-two wonderful years together.

In 1952, dad joined the Marine Corps. and served in Japan, where he worked as a helicopter mechanic and loved to share his stories about these times. Dad was one of the six Utahns that returned by ship carrying 560 veterans of the 1st Marine Air Wing from Korea to San Francisco, CA.

After he returned from Korea, dad became an amazing tile setter and has left his beautiful tile work throughout many homes and businesses in Utah and across many of the western states. He was always quick to point out that if he spotted a crooked grout line that it was not his tile job.

He was such a hard worker and also loved to play. He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, and spending time on his boat with his family and friends. He loved a good game of pool, or just hanging out with buddies at the pool hall.

He loved history books and his trusty solitaire game. He loved long drives with his wife; they would disappear for hours and hours and have wonderful times just driving and seeing if they could get lost.

Dad is survived by his loving wife, Waneta Ensign; son Randy (Deanne); daughter Jerilin (Mike) Brown; grandchildren: Danny, Chelsee, Laycee, and Henry; great-grandchildren: Hailey and Brooklyn; brother Calvin (Jan); sisters: June (Joe) Pons, Caroline Snell, and Beulah George; sister-in-law Cheryl Ensign; and many loving extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by brothers: Ralph and Norman; sister Vonna Rowley; foster sons: Danny and David Horkan; and brothers-in-law: Doug Rowley and Pat Snell.

Dad loved his grandchildren so very much and delighted in teasing them every chance he could get. We will miss you so much and love you with all our hearts and want to thank our mother for the amazing, tender loving care that she gave to our dad every single day.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 8, 2012 at Redwood Memorial Estates, 6500 South Redwood Road (1700 West), Taylorsville, Utah. A viewing will be held on Tuesday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and again one hour prior to the services at Redwood Memorial Estates Mortuary.
