George Washington English was a U.S. Senator and he was named as a Great Floridian from Fort Lauderdale in 2000.

1893-1912 private practice attorney in Vienna, Illinois
1907-1912 Illinois House of Representatives
1912-1914 private practice, Centralia, Illinois
1914-1918 special income tax attorney with the Treasury Department
5/3/1918 confirmed as a U.S. Senator after being nominated by Pres. Woodrow Wilson to a vacated seat.
11-4-1926 resigned after impeachment trail presented charges of treatment of lawyers and litigants. The charges were then dismissed.
Judge English later moved to Florida and worked with son George English in the law firm of Hall, Johnson & English.
