Virginia Emerson Carter, 67, of 314 Edgewood Drive, died Wednesday, August 5, 2009, at her residence after a decline in health for the past three years. Born January 11, 1942, in Danville, VA, she was the daughter of the late James Giles Emerson and Helen Travis Emerson Johnson. She was married to Melvin Frank Carter, Sr., who survives. Their 47th anniversary was May 25, 2009.

Mrs. Carter lived the last 37 years of her life in the Edgewood community. She attended Danville Community College and for several years she operated the Pixie and Dixie Child Care Center. She was a member of Westover Drive Church of God where she was president of the Ladies Auxiliary.

In addition to husband, she is survived by a son, Melvin Frank Carter, Jr. and wife Carrie of Danville; two daughters, Tammy Hammock and Teresa Wyatt and husband Darrell all of Danville; sisters, Tine Emerson of Danville and Ann Matick of Georgia and three brothers, Oscar and Ronnie Daniel of North Carolina and Ernest Daniel of South Carolina. Also surviving are three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Carter Agner.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 8, 2009, at Danville Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Richard Markham officiating. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens.
